Masters 2016: Jordan Spieth the butt of jokes on Twitter after back-nine meltdown

Nothing gets Twitter buzzing quite like a meltdown, and there have been few more spectacular collapses in recent sporting memory than Jordan Spieth’s on the back nine of the Augusta National on Sunday.

Spieth went into the final part of his title defence five shots clear at the top of the leaderboard, having led from the opening round.

But after bogeys at 10 and 11, he twice found the water at the 12th hole, recording a quadruple bogey which ultimately saw him cup up three shots short of winner Danny Willett.

Things then got even worse for the world No 2, who as the reigning champion was required to present the Green Jacket to Willett in an awkward ceremony.

As you might expect, social media reacted with a mixture of sympathy and mirth, with Twitter users responding with plenty of memes.

Plenty of golf fans used the ‘Crying Jordan’ meme, superimposing a tearful Michael Jordan onto the head of Spieth – while one user even managed to make a map of the 12th hole look like the iconic image.

Others posted GIFs of a formula one car with the wheels coming off to mock Spieth’s final-round collapse, while one user asked if we can now expect a new meme of the American ‘lurking in background of historic moments in sports, world events and movies’.
