Creating a healthy work life balance is so much easier if you're doing the work you were born to do. This is not an impossible dream and anyone can find or create that work. When you do, it's like never working another day in your life. Here are four tips to help you create a healthy work life balance by finding the work you were born to do.
Firstly, life has an uncanny habit of giving us what we absolutely need, not necessarily what we want at any given moment. So it's important to be open to the messages and learning that come from challenges and difficulties. When we come to believe that there are no mistakes and wrong decisions, only learning and growth, then life does genuinely feel happier and more purposeful. Think of life as a game where you're playing with the house's money and you can not lose.
Secondly, interesting mental connections and ideas tend to occur when the mind is relaxed and not seriously trying hard to solve the problem of "where on earth is my career heading?" Somehow, I attended a book called "Zen & The Art Of Making A Living" into my life while taking a trip around the world before the birth of my first son and at just the moment when I was calmly receptive to the messages it contained. Out of the experience came the decision to retrain as a business psychologist in my mid-thirties. So be on the look-out for those new mental connections when you're on holiday or out for a relaxing walk with the dog.
Thirdly, be open to making connections between episodes of life which have been develly enjoyable and where you have been "in flow". In other words where time seems to just stand still because you become lost in the process what you are doing, for its own sake. I feel that these moments provide the largest possible clues to finding your life purpose in work. Ask yourself the questions "when has time appeared to stand still for me and what was I doing"?
Fourthly, do not let practicalities traample all over your dreams. It's easy to squash a seedling of an idea for any number of reasons. "I'll never earn a decent living doing that" or "What would so and so think of it". Most of us can not use the creative and rational parts of our brain at the same time. Create the ideas when you're relaxed and reflective. Only get practical when the ideas are more fully formed.
